Bad knees? Do low-impact exercises. |

Q: My problem is simple. I have really bad knees. I have pain whenever I run and knee braces don’t help. Over the past couple of years I’ve ballooned to 275 pounds where I was at 200-215 pounds before. What are some exercises I can do to lose weight and get back down to the 200-pound range without killing my knees?

A: I have one answer and it is simple. Fat people shouldn’t run. And before everyone gets all up in arms about me saying the “F” word, face the facts, fat is fat, and we need to take responsibility. If you’re fat, admit it and move forward. Benjamin, you are doing just that. Losing fat is a calories in, calories out formula, that’s it. So burning more fat calories than we take in will create an energy deficit. There are many alternatives to running. If your knee hurts when you run, try riding a bike or use an elliptical to get your aerobic exercise. These exercises have less impact on your knee joint and will increase muscle around your joint, which is a good thing. A little note before beginning your exercise program — chose some weight training exercises that strengthen your knees such as leg extensions, adduction and abduction and hamstring curls. These exercises will help the stabilizer muscles of the knee joint and act as a shock absorber when exercising.

I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
