Next time you check into a hotel, you might want to safeguard the TV remote. You and your kids are just a few clicks away from hard-core porn. Phil Burress is president of Citizens for Community Values, a public-policy organization that got its start fighting the sex industry.

His group is now raising awareness about the hard-core pornography that's easily available in-room in many hotels.

"We started out fighting porn and the sex business 25 years ago in Cincinnati," Burress told me. "Today Cincinnati has no adult bookstores or strip bars."
That's pretty astounding when you consider that metropolitan Cincinnati has more than a million residents.

The CCV is faith-based, Burress said, but "we're not a church." Some of its members aren't even Christian, he said; they just believe that pornography is harmful. Burress said the organization has about 500,000 names in its member database.

That's sizable, but necessary, especially when you consider that around 40 percent of hotel chains offer hard-core pornography through their pay-per-view channels. According to PBS's "Frontline" show, those chains include Marriott, Westin and Hilton.

"If you go to a businessman's hotel, you'll see a very high percentage of adult programming," said Dennis McAlpine, an entertainment industry expert, in an interview with "Frontline." "In fact, it probably generates 80 percent of the profits of that (pay-per-view) system."

The nearly exclusive source of the adult content, Burress said, is LodgeNet Entertainment Corp., based in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Burress and CCV are trying to pressure LodgeNet into terminating their adult services. The CCV thinks the way the material is distributed via satellite across state lines is illegal, and has started a Web site, http://truthaboutlodgenet.com, to assist in getting out its message.

In August, he and members plan to go to South Dakota and hold a news conference asking that state's U.S. attorney to take action against LodgeNet.

To counter some of the harmful aspects of pornography, Burress' organization started another Web site, www.victimsofpornography.org. It reaches out to people affected by pornography, whether they are addicts or have been exposed to its negative effects.

Burress wants to help people find alternatives to hotels with adult content when they travel. To do so, the CCV created a Web site called www.cleanhotels.com. They've surveyed hotel chains to find ones that don't offer X-rated material. On the site, you can type in a city and find an accommodation.

He hopes people will frequent these hotels instead and show their appreciation for their resolve.

I hope so, too.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
