Is Greeley the new national musical hotspot?

Not likely, but if everything goes as planned for The Color Of Money, Greeley will at least be in the national spotlight come Sept. 10, the date MusicNation.com announces the winner of its national online band competition.

The contest is still in the early stages, but already Greeley-based foursome The Color Of Money have qualified for the quarterfinal round based on a nationwide vote. Members hope it’s the first of many fortunate breaks. Though they have been together a little longer than a year, the band, which mixes diverse Latin influences with modern day rock trappings, has lofty pursuits that extend way beyond northern Colorado. Winning the contest, which includes a developmental recording contract and other perks, would certainly help.

“A lot of bands are just playing music and playing gigs and they don’t have any real goals,” lead singer and percussionist David Herrera said. “We’d like to make this an actual career. (Winning) this contest would really help us a lot.”

The voting platform is simple: go to MusicNation.com, open a free account, and then listen to, and vote for, any of the bands still in competition. Herrera believes it is their sound that helped them become the “nation’s choice” for the first week of the contest, which features 1,000 bands.

“What I like about this (format) is that the music speaks for itself. If you like the music, you vote for it,” he said. “When you have a slew of bands in this (competition) and so many sound alike or already sound like someone that’s big … if you sound like The Fray, well, they’ve already done that. You need to be different.”

The Color Of Money is different. Herrera admits he was initially skeptical about the group, but is excited that they’ve gelled into a tight-knit unit where everyone contributes. That much is reflected in their music, full of edgy, experimental rock with a Latin twist not unlike Rage Against the Machine or At The Drive-In, but not exactly like it either.

“What we’re really experimenting with is taking the influences from our individual Latin backgrounds as well as the music we are listening to right now and letting that come out in what we write,” Herrera concurred. “We’ve tried to put in our music something that’s structured, but you can also be free to solo and experiment with it.”

Now, if they can only win the MusicNation.com contest and get their sound out to the masses.

The final round begins Sept. 3, but first The Color Of Money must make it though the 16-band quarterfinals, and then the semifinals with eight bands.

“We’ve had really strong support from people who’ve never even heard of us, and that gets you really charged,” Herrera concluded. “It builds your confidence and we think we’ve got what it takes to win the competition.”

It is awesome to see a local band getting some of the recognition that they deserve. Here's hoping that they win.

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
