No one would mistake Greeley and Evans as a hotbed of hip hop. Not by a long shot.
But that doesn’t mean that the undercurrents of a growing hip-hop scene don’t exist. It’s just not many people know about them.
Albert Stright hopes to remedy that.
Stright is putting on the Evans Hip Hop Fiesta at Evans Riverside Park.
The event will be a showcase for a host of northern Colorado hip-hop acts, most from Greeley and Evans. His production company, Legitimate Entertainment, will also release its first CD, “Legitimate Hustle,” on Saturday. It’s a compilation of all the artists in the Legitimate stable.
Stright produced the record in his own digital studio.
“We’re totally legit,” Stright said. “We want to establish ourselves in Greeley, and be accepted as a business in Greeley.”
The fiesta, which drew about 500 people in its inaugural outing last year, is one way to gain such acceptance.
“It’s also a way to really try to do something for the community,” Stright said. He’ll be giving away school supplies to all the kids in attendance, picking up the tab out of his own pocket.
“I’m an Hispanic man and grew up poor, so I understand that it’s hard sometimes for parents to buy school supplies,” Stright said.
Originally from Texas, he moved to the Greeley area in 1990.
He’ll probably even pick up a mic Saturday and do a little freestylin’ under the rap moniker E.P.E.
“But I’m getting kind of old for that.” Old in the hip-hop world, in this case, is 28. Although the hip-hop fiesta is a chance for the acts to get some exposure in northern Colorado, other opportunities are limited. There’s Cinco de Mayo and Fiesta Day and a private party here and there, but not much else.
So that begs the question: Why try to scratch out a niche for hip hop in a place like Greeley and Evans where there doesn’t seem to be much of a market for it? The answer, Stright said, is in the culture of hip hop.
“You have to represent where you live. You want to make a name for your home.” And if Stright and one of his aspiring acts are successful, you could hear this on MTV: “Next, it’s an up-and-coming act from Greeley, Colorado.” Now that would be a chamber of commerce moment.

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
