Kurt Humann remembers a quaint restaurant in a small California town where every Saturday, the elderly would meet and sip Mimosas. Over a champagne breakfast, they would reminisce about the good-old days and laugh with cherished friends.
“I think it’s great,” Humann said. “No matter how old they got, these people would set aside a day to be young again.”
The 25-year-old from Wellington thought it was so great, he decided to name his band with that mantra in mind.
Champagne Breakfast, the Fort Collins alternative rock group, is busy preparing a fresh sound and new songs. After some rocky patches with former band members, the group is moving forward.
“We’ve all quit our jobs to do this,” said Humann, lead vocalist and acoustic guitarist.
The band is taking September off from performing so it can focus some time toward writing new songs and recording its first album.
“We’re taking the plunge,” said drummer Skip Brown.
Brown describes the group’s sound as an infusion of hard rock with bits of funk and everything else you could possibly imagine.
In essence, it’s alternative rock that draws similarities to several ‘90s bands.
“I don’t like writing music people don’t want to hear,” Humann said. “I like everything. Pretty much the point is to not just become another band with one song that makes them heard. We want all our songs to be heard. I don’t want to write filler songs. No fillers.”
NEXTnc: What’s the hardest part of breaking up? (With members of a band that is.) BROWN: All that high school crap that comes after. This was the first time I’ve had to deal with it. HUMANN: For me, the hardest part is knowing you have to do it, that day, week and hours before you have to do it. Once you do it, you’re relieved. I always give people the benefit of the doubt. I’m the “it’s not you, it’s me” guy. I’m harmless.
NEXTnc: If you could have any piece of rock ’n’ roll memorabilia, what would it be? BROWN: Bjork wore a lime green feather boa at a show. That would be awesome to put up on the studio wall. HUMANN: I’d love to have one of Lindsey Buckingham’s guitars. It doesn’t matter which one. He is so good.
NEXTnc: What’s one thing you have to do before the summer ends? HUMANN: I’ve gotta go floating down the river. BROWN: Fishing and golf. I’m planning on doing them both very soon. Read more at NEXTnc.com
NEXTnc: Who are you currently listening to on your iPod? BROWN: I guess that would be a future thing, since I don’t have an iPod. I listen to sports talk radio. HUMANN: The last thing I was listening to was “Weird Science”.
NEXTnc: What’s the biggest thing you hope to achieve as you start to record more songs? HUMANN: I would like to get on college radio. That would be the first goal, I think. It’s a real goal for a local band. BROWN: I just really want this CD to capture who we are. I believe in our sound. We all have put in a lot and continue to put a lot in it.

| | "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth." | |
| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
