They’re bringing rock to the block.
Hoping to better connect University of Northern Colorado students, local businesses and bands, a group is throwing a block party where UNC and a few college-oriented businesses intersect — 16th Street and 9th Avenue. The free event will run from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 14.
“The hope is to draw attention to the local businesses that are downtown near the university,” said Jeff Cook, one of the organizers. “… We want it to be a fair-like atmosphere to draw more Friday night culture into the town.”
Another driving force is to cultivate a live music scene in Greeley, similar to other area college towns of Fort Collins and Boulder.
“We have one of the best music schools in the country,” Cook said of UNC. The block party will showcase about 30 bands on several stages. Organizers have a permit to close 9th Avenue just north of 16th Street.
Businesses along 16th Street will offer goods on the sidewalk, including Margie’s Java Joint (931 16th St.). The coffee shop will sell iced drinks and host a concert stage on its patio.
“We’re really excited about it,” said T.J. Wilson, Margie’s manager. “It’s a good opportunity to help build community with the businesses in this are as well as the students on campus.”
Margie’s hosts regular open-mike nights and live music and plans to build on that along with Beetle Productions, a music promotions group. Beetle shares space with Atlas Church at 829 16th St.
Tim Coons, a UNC graduate and local musician, is excited to perform at the party. “I thought it was a wonderful idea,” he said. “It would be good for Greeley, good for the block to throw this party, good for the businesses getting those college students in there.”
Fort Collins rock band Tickle Me Pink and Stampead, a Los Angeles-based band, are among the other groups performing on the block.
Cook said he hopes the gathering is a rocking success.
“We want to see the block party be an annual event that starts off the year,” he said.

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
