Some churchgoers might find it a tad alarming to find a 2X3-foot placard in their church’s window announcing that there would be liquor served there. But for members of the Atlas Church community in Greeley, it’s all part of a plan to help revitalize 16th Street, an area across from the University of Northern Colorado campus—and also bring good music to Greeley.

Thirty bands worth of good music, and they’re doing it for free.

“We said, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could shut down the entire block and have a block party?’” said Jeff Cook, one of the Block Party’s organizers. “And that’s pretty much going to be a reality on Friday night.”

The organizers have done their homework, bringing in Los Angeles-based Stampead, a quirky, twangy four-piece that happily floats from downbeat introspection to rollicking, revival-esque tunes. Watch especially for their engaging cover the Talking Heads “Psycho Killer.”

Also at the top of the bill is Tickle Me Pink, a Fort Collins-based quartet that combines the best elements of pop punk and emo, reminiscent of bands like At the Drive-In. With A&R people at Atlantic Records showing an interest, catching them now might not be such a bad idea.

Another local band to look for is Whelk, a Fort Collins-based indie/experimental trio that’s been gaining attention in the Fort as well as Denver. They have a fearlessly odd sound that varies wildly from song to song, but nonetheless engages the listener, reminding one of a young Isaac Brock’s wackier moments.

Tim Coons, a UNC graduate and local musician, is excited to perform at the party.
“I thought it was a wonderful idea,” he said. “It would be good for Greeley, good for the block to throw this party, good for the businesses getting those college students in there.”

And there’s no real rhyme or reason to the line-up: according to organizer Cook, diversity of music was one goal. More importantly, Cook and the other organizers hope to inject a spark of life to Greeley’s music and culture scene, hopefully on a yearly basis.

“We’re hoping to make it an annual thing,” Cook said. “As opposed to Fort Collins, Greeley doesn’t have a lot going on with nightlife, life on the weekends. Many students take off and go to Boulder and Fort Collins. We want to see that change—there’s no reason Greeley can’t thrive with that sort of collegiate life.”
Tribune reporter Chris Casey contributed to this story.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
