There’s the slight chill in the air that accompanies fall. There’s the views of a slight layer of snow that covers the peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park. And there’s the annual Warren Miller film.

They all mean one thing: It’s time to get jacked for ski season.

Perhaps nothing signals that more to skiers and snowboarders than the Miller films.
“What they really do is they get people ramped up about the coming year,” said Larry Modlin, owner of the Alpine Haus, 4855 10th St. Road in Greeley.

The Union Colony Civic Center in Greeley is attempting to capitalize on that by putting on its own showing of the annual Warren Miller movie. This year’s movie is called “Playground,” and it’s the first time the UCCC is putting on the event as its own production. In past years, Miller’s production crew just rented out the UCCC and put on its own showing.

That means extra stuff this year, including picking five people out of the audience who are dressed up in a costume and giving them a prize. The film will show a couple days before Halloween. It also means starting the party at the Island Grill, the new downtown restaurant, a couple hours before the showing of the movie.
“We’re just trying to have some fun with it,” said Andy Segal, spokesman for the UCCC.

Some of the other standbys at a Warren Miller production are still there, including free ski passes (three this year, to Winter Park, Copper Mountain and Steamboat).

That also includes the breathtaking shots of skiers doing crazy things down huge mountains, interspersed with humorous bits that make snowboarding and skiing fun. This will be Miller’s 58th film on skiing.

“You have to give him credit,” Modlin said of Miller. “I don’t know of anyone who can sell the same product for so long. He’s become an icon that tells us the season is upon us and it’s time to get excited, and he does a great job of doing that.”

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
