Acting stalwarts like John Malkovich and Julia Roberts have brought the story to life. Even Bugs Bunny did his best with the tale about a man that has two distinct sides.

Now students in Greeley Central High School Thespian Troupe 657 will tackle the story of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” And just because it’s a high school production doesn’t mean the troupe will dance around some of the tough issues in the adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella, “Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.”

“There is a lot of mature content in this play,” said Mark Kolokoff, head of the school’s thespian program. “It is quite a challenge for our students, but it addresses issues that make it a good drama.”

Stevenson’s novella, which first appeared in print in 1886, is famous for its portrayal of the psychopathology of a split personality as it follows a London lawyer’s quest to uncover the strange occurrences between Dr. Henry Jekyll and the misanthropic Mr. Hyde.

Stage adaptations of the novella began shortly after the story first appeared in print, and the GCHS thespian program is taking on the play, violence and all.

According to Kolokoff, the play is highly dramatic and provides his theater students with a great opportunity to express all the facets of acting.

“It can be disturbing, because when Jekyll becomes Hyde, he kills two people, and shoots another,” Kolokoff said. “I want to stress that the show is for an audience aged 13 and older.”

While the play portrays violence, Kolokoff said it is a good story because it highlights the duality of man and what we, as human beings, are capable of.

“The story is very actable,” Kolokoff said. “I am hoping the play will generate a good discussion and exchange among people—as theater reflects society.”

Kolokoff said the audience will be pleasantly surprised with his troupe’s portrayal of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” The troupe, after all, has been active in Greeley since 1945.

“The thespian troupe at Greeley Central has seen at least 1,500 students pass through its doors,” Kolokoff said. “We definitely have a long-standing history (in theater).”

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
