The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. At least that was the case for Paul Lovelace, a filmmaker from New York. His father, Jack Lovelace, spent 30 years in journalism before becoming an instructor in Colorado State University’s journalism department.

“I can name films or bands that have inspired me to be a filmmaker, but I would certainly say he would be up there with any of them,” said Paul, 30.

In a lot of ways, their careers do overlap and feed off of an inherent curiosity from within. Beyond that though, the father and son also share a love for music—something that prompted Paul to create his first documentary feature, “The Holy Modal Rounders... Bound to Lose.” The film, which he co-directed and co-produced, chronicles the bizarre 40-year history of The Holy Modal Rounders, a 1960s Greenwich Village psychedelic folk duo.

The Lyric Cinema Cafe is hosting a one night screening of the film at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9. The DVD will be released at the end of the year.

“To be honest, when we started we didn’t have any idea what we were doing,” Paul said. “We just like the band, thought they were fascinating and wanted others to experience what we were experiencing.”

It all started at a concert in 1999. Paul said he was intrigued by all the drama—the fighting and making up—between the two band members who couldn’t be more different, but whose music and rebellious spirits brought them together. The film features Dennis Hopper, former band member Sam Shepard, Peter Tork of The Monkees, Wavy Gravy and many others.

It took five years of filming more than 200 hours of footage to complete the project. He and his partners worked on editing a variety of other projects from reality shows to video games during that time.

“We’d work, take time off to shoot, be broke and have to work again,” Paul said. “That’s often how it goes when someone is doing their first film.”

Jack Lovelance said he is, of course, proud of his son, but that it’s his journalistic nature to attempt to be objective. He has seen the film and said it is surprisingly good. The father is also quick to not take too much credit for instilling in his son a love of music. Jack said there have been several times when his son has introduced him to new bands, including bands from Jack’s generation.

“For me I have always loved music and always loved film,” Jack said. “Everybody follows their own path and he also on his own developed his love for music... I think it’s great to follow your passion.”

Paul said he loves music films and rock documentaries and is inspired by films like Gimme Shelter, The Decline of Western Civilization, and Don’t Look Back.

“What I really liked about those films is you don’t have to be an expert to really enjoy them,” Paul said. “That’s what we tried to do with this film. We wanted to make a film that would appeal to people outside their fan base.”

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
