The University of Northern Colorado is known for producing teachers and nurses, not opera singers.
But UNC’s music school is nationally renowned, so why not have an aspiring soprano come from the university, graduate and move to New York City to pursue a dream of singing on the world’s biggest stages?
Why not indeed.
Emily Fellner, a 2004 graduate of UNC, returns to Greeley to perform with the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra in its spring pops concert this weekend. The orchestra will tackle a variety of compositions by Leonard Bernstein.
In her homecoming performance, Fellner will sing the love songs of the classic Bernstein musical, “West Side Story.”
Now a graduate student working toward a master’s degree in vocal performance at the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music, Fellner has continued to surround herself with many musical endeavors. To go along with her graduate school studies, Fellner also assists in conducting the college production of “The Ballad of Baby Doe” and acts as a voice coach to other students at the college. Yet, her dream is to sing for a world audience.
“I see myself as a very ambitious person. The simple truth is that it takes a lot of time for a singer’s voice to fully develop and to become quite solid,” Fellner said. “I hope to be ready to begin auditioning for opera houses all over the world once my graduate studies are over.”
In the meantime, Fellner returns to the place where she earned her foundation in singing and voice technique.
Invited by a colleague with whom she did a production of “The King and I” with the Greeley community theater, this Saturday’s performance will be her first since she left Greeley for the East Coast. It will also be the first time she has performed accompanied by music from the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra. And it’s her first time singing alongside male tenor Tom Krebs.
“I am excited to see some old pals, and to share with them what I have learned since leaving Greeley. I am looking forward to performing in the Union Colony Civic Center again,” said Fellner. “The opportunity to sing in a house like that does not come around very often for a young artist like me.”
To Go • The Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra Spring Pops concert • 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 8 • Union Colony Civic Center, 701 10th Ave. in Greeley • Tickets range from $8-$35 • For more information, call 356-5000 • Conducted by Glen Cortese, the show will include many of the works of Bernstein as well as a symphonic dance and vocals to the songs from “West Side Story.”

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
