Every good ’80s rock band had at least one power ballad — that song that let the world know the rockers had a heart.
Those rockers, too, played in huge festivals like Live Aid and Farm Aid, events that raised money for good causes.
A Greeley-based band that plays covers of those ’80s rockers is taking the lead in its own festival of sorts — one that is much smaller than Live Aid but for a cause no less worthy.
Open Fire, which has played gigs in northern Colorado since 2005, is headlining Amandafest this Saturday at the Bayou Steakhouse in Lucerne. Proceeds will go to the family of Amanda Gonzales, a 17-year-old junior at Northridge High School who has an inoperable brain tumor. She was diagnosed last October. A 5K run and walk held as a fundraiser in November attracted more than 2,000 people. Such an outpouring continues with events like Amandafest.
Dave Klein, drummer for Open Fire, said he and his bandmates are excited to be involved. A friend of the band members, Marti Bradley, asked them if they’d play, and they jumped at the chance.
“I mean, to help your family and loved ones is a given. When it’s someone you don’t know, it makes it that much sweeter,” Klein said. Other bands Seven Sundays, Ragged Doll and i69 round out the bill.
Bradley’s daughter, Chelsea, is also a junior at Northridge and has been a friend of Amanda for years.
“It’s just a tough, tough situation,” she said.
Bradley wanted to do something for the family, and she had met the band members because of her job at Pioneer Press — they print many of the group’s promotional materials — and so the idea of a small music festival was formed.
Bradley said the Bayou Steakhouse has offered its facilities at no cost, too.
“Marti has done a lot of work organizing this, now it’s our job to pull off the musical end of it,” Klein said.

| | "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth." | |
| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
