If “Hawaii Five-O” and “Magnum P.I.” are all that you know about our 50th state, it’s probably time to broaden your horizons a bit.
The Ha’aheo ‘O Hawai’i Club (that’s the Hawaii Club) at the University of Northern Colorado will host its 17th annual Luau on Saturday.
This year’s theme is “Rhythm of the Islands.”
The event is traditionally a popular one — attracting about 750 people last year.
UNC has a substantial student contingent from the islands who come to Greeley as part of the Western Undergraduate Exchange Program, which allows students to attend the school at a cost that is less than regular out-of-state tuition.
The Luau is a way for those students to get a little taste of home while giving Colorado residents some cultural education.
Jordan Odo, 21, is a senior at UNC and a member of the Hawaii Club. When he came to UNC as a freshman, he had never seen snow before.
“Basically, it was a new experience,” Odo said, thankful for the opportunity the exchange program provides, “It is a way to go away from home and mature a little.”
The Hawaii Club has about 60 members, and they spend the year planning for the big event.
At the Luau, you’ll be greeted by hula dancer. Dinner is of traditional Hawaiian fare, with this year’s menu consisting of kalua pig, chicken long rice and haupia, which is a coconut pudding.
After dinner, the entertainment is an impressive arrangement of traditional dances.
Through the greetings, food and hula dances, Odo said he and his fellow club members hope people who come to the Luau will learn a little about his home. That’s why he gets excited about the Luau every year.
“For one, you get to show everyone what your culture is all about,” Odo said. “And for another, it also allows me to feel at home again.”

| | "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth." | |
| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
