Pangaea: Festival of art, music, words

Born in Libya to Hungarian political refugees, David Rozgonyi lives to travel. In his 29 years, the writer has lived on four continents and backpacked across six. His biggest challenge in life is to stay put, but he has managed to ground himself in Fort Collins for the last eight or nine years.

The writer’s new book, “Goat Trees: Tales from the Other Side of the World” comes out April 26 at a literary and art festival called Pangaea in Fort Collins. The book is a collection of 11 short stories set in places like Cambodia, North Africa, Japan, the South Pacific, China and Hungary.

“I go to different places and write about them so I don’t forget,” Rozgonyi said. “If I can make a fun story around them, all the better. And if someone else likes reading them, it’s icing on the cake.”

Now, the traveling man is looking for a new adventure. To promote his book, Rozgonyi has arranged the Travel Mate Contest. In the back of each book is an official entry form. In 150 words or less contestants must tell him where in the world they would like to go and why. Rozgonyi will sift through the submissions and select one lucky traveler. That person wins an all expense paid 10-day trip with Rozgonyi to his or her dream spot.

“Since traveling is what I love to do, I thought it would be a fantastic idea to share this with somebody,” he said.

The contest will be open from April 26 to Feb. 15. Rozgonyi will announce the winner around Feb. 21 and the trip will be booked within one calendar year.
“For my personality, traveling is an extremely addictive thing to do, especially the specific way I like to go about it,” he said. “It’s much more fun to go into a place you wouldn’t have thought to go into, like a little village. It’s a totally different experience and I feel more connected.”

Rozgonyi said moving around so much changed his life. After he was born he lived in Lybia for a few years until his parents fled to Germany. He ended up spending the bulk of his time as a child in Texas and Australia. But all the moving never bothered Rozgonyi.

“I was one of the weird kids that loved it,” he said. “Besides, I always had a ton of books and they always went with me.”

When he isn’t roaming, Rozgonyi works as the fiction editor for the journal Matter, and Many Mountains Moving. He is working on a new book which will take place entirely in Cambodia, one of his favorite places.

His goal is to help change the way people see the world through his detailed storytelling.

“We try to provide most of the cultural and military direction of the world, but we steadfastly refuse to consider the perspectives of those who would live beneath our shadow,” he said in a written statement. “I want to illustrate the fact that we are almost exactly the same, and so the only thing we can and should really fear is the mirror on ourselves.”

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
