Kevin Cox didn’t know how to type a Word document let alone program an entire company’s computer system. But Cox, 35, has managed to create a successful information technology business in northern Colorado in just as little as three years.
The reason behind the success of Cox’s business, Colorado Network Management Inc., is Cox’s “real world education experience” at Aims Community College, he said.
“Most classes brought the real world into the classroom,” Cox said. “I went from not being able to type on Word to programming, database design, networking and network security.”
Cox continued his education through the Career and Technical Education program offered at Aims.
Jared Fiel, director of marketing and public information at Aims said this program is designed for the nontraditional student — anyone over the age of 23.
“This is a program that will train you to get a job, it’s not a general education foundation,” Fiel said.
The career education program makes career changes a real possibility, Fiel said, because it offers training to update skills and upgrade a career.
The program offers training in accounting, computer systems, emergency services, fire science, nursing and welding among others.
Cox said he not only recommends the Aims program but hires directly from it.
“It’s where I got my start and it prompted me to open my business,” he said. “It’s the reason for the success I’ve got right now.”

I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
