University of Northern Colorado students will perform “The Servant of Two Masters” beginning Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. in Norton Theatre.
“The Servant of Two Masters” is a commedia style play written by Carlo Goldoni. Arguably Goldoni’s greatest achievement was standardizing commedia or the art of improvised comedy.
The play centers on Truffaldino, a servant who works for two masters; through his employment, he encounters many an awkward but humorous situation. Director Mary Schuttler says that, above all, the audience can expect to laugh throughout the performance.
“The physical comedy and jokes are constant, like a whole play of vaudeville; there is nothing dramatic about it,” Schuttler said.
Schuttler also said that, historically, this particular piece and other commedia works were produced for ordinary people. She believes the play still holds mass appeal today.
“Commedia productions were for the everyday audience, the masses. I think it appeals to everybody. With commedia you can see where all the physical comedy and traditional joke-telling comes from, as well as the roots of modern comedy,” Schuttler said.
In addition to entertaining the audience, the student-actors are learning to hone their skills and practice their craft before a live audience.
“A lot of these students go on to graduate school or to perform in professional theater. Our goal is to give them an experience in every genre that we can. Now that they have done commedia, they have another style under their belts that they can take with them when they graduate,” Schuttler said.

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
