Like many who forever remember their first home, Jim Benest of Fort Collins won’t forget his starter gallery. Soon Benest, owner of The Collective Fine Art Gallery, will close his doors at 218 Linden St. and open new doors at 109 S. College.

“This is a much anticipated— and needed— move. We’ve literally outgrown the Linden Street space,” he said.

Filled with mixed emotions, Benest is sad to leave the location where he built his foundation, but excited about the expansion. The Collective Five Art Gallery has enjoyed two years of success at its current location.

The new location means three times the room. Before, the gallery represented 16 artists, but the new room will feature 30 artists.

“I wanted to bring in more types of art,” Benest said.

In addition to paintings, the gallery will feature bronze sculptures, photography, jewelry and stained glass.

The Collective Fine Art Gallery will officially open Oct. 6 during the monthly gallery walk. The grand opening with a raffle drawing is scheduled for the following gallery walk. Though the move is a giant step up, it is still not Benest’s full vision.

“I would like to have some working studios, but this is not going to happen. It will be the vision for next time because we aren’t going to have the space.”

Already, Benest has quickly filled the extra square footage with new art.

“Even if I had a warehouse, it would still become too small at some point,” he said.
Still, Benest hopes to host several events in his new location.

“The new gallery gives us more options and more room to house entertainment,” he said.

Starting Oct. 7, the gallery will feature live demonstrations. A selected artist will come in two to three times a week for a couple hours and work on a piece of art in the window. The public will be able to view the progress and walk through the steps of creation with the artist.

“Motion creates motion, so putting motion in the window will hopefully create people coming in,” Benest said.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
