When Angela Palmer was 14, she immigrated from Greece, carrying little more than a suitcase and tradition with her — tradition in language, tradition in family and tradition in food.
Palmer met her husband Spiro through church and they opened Palmer Flowers in Fort Collins.
Spiro immigrated from Greece in the early ’70s and they proudly passed their culture on to their kids.
“All three of our children speak Greek fluently,” she said.
Palmer and her family have attended several Greek events in Denver through the years. She even wrote her own Greek cookbook. But in her 30 years in Fort Collins, Palmer has never seen a Greek festival in her own town— until now.
St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church in Loveland is sponsoring the first ever Northern Colorado Greek Festival this weekend in Old Town square Fort Collins. “I am ecstatic,” Palmer said.
It is said that food is the foundation of the Greek family life, so naturally there will be an abundance of traditional Greek food. From gyros, souvlaki, and spanakopita to loukoumades, baklava and kataifi, no one should go hungry.
Harry Souvall, chairman of the event, said the goal is to bring Greece, as much as possible, to northern Colorado. He realized there was no reason for people to drive 50 miles to Denver to experience the delectable food and culture of Greeks.
“I think this area is independent on its own. It doesn’t need a big city to feed off of. We are turning into one big northern Colorado community,” Souvall said.
In addition to catered food, the festival will feature music, dancing, wine and beer. Admission is free and food items range between $1 and $5. A portion of the proceeds will go to Weld and Larimer food banks.
“It’s not a religious function,” Souvall said. “We want people to come to have fun, share the food, share the drink and share the dance.”
Palmer and her husband will visit Greece next month, but to tide them over until then, the Northern Colorado Greek Festival will bring home a little closer.

| | "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth." | |
| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
