Page 1 of 2 More summer movie blockbusters are still on the way, but for those who can’t wait to sit in the air-conditioned darkness, the 7th annual Silver Spoon Film Festival in Loveland is where you can get your start.
The festival, started in 2000 by a group of Loveland High School students, is an opportunity for amateur filmmakers and fans alike to experience something outside of the Hollywood norm.
“It’s definitely a learning experience for the kids,” said Jenni Dobson, Youth Activities Coordinator for the Loveland Museum. “We just want them to learn from the experience from the making of the films.”
The films are judged by a panel of professionals from around northern Colorado. Professors from Aims, and the owner of a production company in northern Colorado are just a few of the judges.
This year, about 19 films out of the 49 submitted, will be shown.
“A lot of the entries came from Thompson Valley High School,” Dobson said. “They have a really strong film program with Brett Goldstein there.”
The one thing that makes this festival unusual is its focus on a younger demographic than most other film festivals like it.
“This one is geared more toward teens,” Dobson said. “I don’t think there are a lot (of film festivals) that are geared toward the high school age group.”
The average film is somewhere between seven and 10 minutes with some of the films running for the entire 20-minute limit.
The films are judged and the students are given notes on what they can do to improve.
“The judging is a learning experience,” Dobson said. “We provide the kids with the judges notes at the end.”
Some of the students will enter films every year.
“We definitely had kids who submitted a film last year who submitted a film this year,” Dobson said.
So where did the name Silver Spoon Film Festival come from?
“I think it was just one of those things that the students came up with on their own,” Dobson said. “We put silver spoons on a plaque for all the winners.”

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
