MOTHERLY PERSPECTIVES
Three area women share their stories of motherhood

‘Being a mom makes me a better cop’
For Wendy Rich-Goldschmidt being a working mom is all about balance. Rich-Goldschmidt is the chief of the University of Northern Colorado Police Department and mother of three.

“I very much enjoy my profession, but its only a part of me,” she said. “What keeps me grounded is my family. Being a mom makes me a better cop because it reminds me of the big picture.”

Having such a demanding career does require some creative problem solving and juggling schedules. Between her and her husband, who is also a police officer, they are usually able to make things work.

“We are heavily into sports,” Rich-Goldschmidt said. “Currently we are a big soccer family.”

Though her two oldest are grown and no longer live at home, her youngest is 10. She said she loves watching her daughter play her heart out.

Even though Rich-Goldschmidt could never see herself as a stay-at-home mom, she still is very involved in her children’s lives. Next week she is taking some days off to accompany her daughter on a field trip to a YMCA camp.

“There’s no greater joy in life than being a parent,” she said.

Adoption option a fit for family
Christy Schmuhl said she is a firm believer in her job as a stay-at-home mom, at least while her children are still in school.

After having her son, who is now 13 years old, Schmuhl and her husband decided they wanted to adopt a second child.

“We always wanted two,” she said.

But it wasn’t always easy. Lia, now 5, was 9 months old when they got her from China. Because Lia spent the first part of her life in an orphanage, she had a difficult time bonding with her parents. Schmuhl would ask her to stop hitting and she would just hit harder.

“I encourage new moms to get help when they think they are losing it,” Schmuhl said. “I got out once a week and left my daughter with a trusted friend. I also went to Estes Park two or three times. Sometimes you need to get away. There’s nothing wrong with you. It’s a hard job.”

As tough as it gets though, Schmuhl loves her job.

“We have family meals together every night and have a fun time together,” Schmuhl said.

‘This is our miracle baby’
Though not officially a mom yet, Rikki Cano is expecting her first born in June. Cano, who is diabetic, said so far her pregnancy has gone surprisingly well.

“I guess you could say this is our miracle baby, because doctors had said there would be complications.”

For the next few months the couple will be busy with final preparations. Cano said they haven’t picked a name for their little boy yet, but his room is all ready.
Being a first-time mom can be a little nerve-racking, but Cano hopes things will come naturally.

“My husband is already saying, ‘let’s have another one,’ but I haven’t even had this one yet,” she said. “I told him we will see.”

Both sets of expecting grandparents told the couple they would probably need to trade in their sports car for a mini van. But, Cano said the car seat fits, so they will hold off for awhile.

Cano is looking forward to bringing her new-born home from the hospital and just holding him.

“Seeing the little face of the person I’ve been carrying for 9 months is going to be such a big thing for me,” she said.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
