Page 2 of 6 Tour kids, Dead Heads still follow their favorite bands
While Woodstock may be a thing of the past, tour kids and Dead Heads still seek life on the road.
Gary Howard, 31, originally from Alabama, followed the Grateful Dead for about four years before finally planting himself in Fort Collins.
“I literally lived show to show,” he said.
He went to his first Grateful Dead show in 1991 and was blown away.
“Being a 17-year-old kid from Alabama, it was like I was at the circus. I couldn’t get my mind around it.”
He was hooked. He went to show after show until Jerry Garcia died.
After going to his last Grateful Dead show in Las Vegas in 1995, Howard went on the Phish tour for a while.
“I sold food or drugs and did whatever I had to do to get by,” he said. “This style is not for everybody.”
He has seen many kids become heroin junkies or overdose on drugs.
“I choose not to live under a bridge,” he said. “I know right from wrong.”
Howard got turned on by the Old Town atmosphere while passing though Fort Collins 10 years ago. Because Alabama wasn’t conducive to his new lifestyle, he came to Fort Collins.
“There were just a lot of narrow-minded people who are quick to judge or label you,” he said. “There are so many different people in the world. You really see the melting pot when you travel, but at the end of the day, no one has a clue.”
Erica Paschold, 22, of Fort Collins follows String Cheese Incident. She makes clothes to sell on the road.
“I really like the art aspect of it,” she said. “There are so many handmade things. It’s like the Mecca of creations. It’s awesome. You get to meet the people who made it, unlike when you buy something from a store.”
She said she makes enough money to get from show to show, but sometimes her sales do suffer because some fans — and she doesn’t paint all fans this way — choose to dabble in the drug culture rather than buy handmade clothes.
She said she loves meeting new people on the road and has friends everywhere. “It’s an awesome support system. Everyone helps each other.”

| | "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth." | |
| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
