I have recently discovered a new pet-peeve of mine. I can't figure out why people don't return phone calls, especially work-related or business calls. Talk about unprofessional. If someone takes the time to leave a message or even 12, they deserve a call back. I understand people get busy, but it only takes a few minutes to pick up the phone. I guess it all goes back to the idea of treating others how you want to be treated. Certainly you don't want to be ignored and neither do other people. Isn't this the reason we have voicemail in the first place? Or maybe we have it so we know who just called and don't have to talk to them if we don't want to. I guess my point is it is common courtesy to return phone calls. It is something that should just be a habit.

Not so common

Common courtesy has become less common in recent years. Not returning phone calls is just one example.

Have you ever gone out of your way to do something a little extra for someone and never hear a formal acknowledgement? Maybe you get a "thanks", but that's it, nothing else. Not even an e-card of thanks. You send a client or business associate an acknowledgement of an event or special occasion and you get "crickets". You say thank you to someone for their service or thoughtfulness and they say: "no problem" rather than "you're welcome". Hey, I didn't say it was a problem, I said thank you! I'm appreciating what you did!

These ARE common courtesies and they're not too much to expect. We live in a society, however, that often refuses to give the expected, as though to do so would mean we are programmed and not sincere. We seem to fear conformity, yet we all do the "wave" at a football game, or holler "play ball" after the National Anthem. Don't we?

I agree Erin. We need to re-examine our business practices and our habits of common respect for those around us, even if it has nothing whatsoever to do with getting ahead. Respect is in decline; for others and for ourselves.

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
