Page 1 of 2 Five Dicks No Chicks is kind of like a no-girls-allowed tree house club for grown-ups. Actually, it’s an investment group for motivated men looking for opportunities and camaraderie.
Keith G. Sheaffer, 36, Justin Yeater, 27 and Jason Yeater, 27, realized over beers how much money they were wasting and much more power their money would carry if combined together. Scott T. Smith, 39, joined soon thereafter. The fifth member of the group decided to leave while he was pursuing his masters, but will probably return in the future.
“We all have a unique and different perspective on everything,” Jason Yeater said. “Everyone has a drive to be successful.”
While Five Dicks No Chicks business is conducted in a professional manner, it also serves as a structured form of social interaction.
The group is mandated to meet once a month, but the group of friends tend to get together more frequently than that. The main challenge is balancing full-time jobs. Jason Yeater, is a full time teacher and owns a landscape company with his twin, Justin Yeater. Sheaffer works for an engineering firm and Smith owns his own large animal veterinarian practice.
In addition, the three original members latest project is Touchstone Home Health Care, a new home health-care agency offering nursing, physical/occupational/speech therapy, medical social worker and home health aide.
“This group is so creative, I am going to buy them all a notebook so they can write down all of their ideas,” Sheaffer said.
Justin Yeater said everything the group has invested in so far has come about through their personal lives. They have looked at several opportunities with e-trading and picked all kinds of stock exchanges, after doing a fair amount of research.
“It’s just a lot of fun,” Smith said.
New members must be voted on unanimously by the group and significant others are not allowed to influence investment decisions.
Sheaffer said there is talk of some friendly competition. His wife is thinking about putting together 5 Chicks No Dicks for a group of woman.
Jason Yeater said the guys are open to a challenge involving some sort of fun wager.
“We will help them with the start-up,” Sheaffer said. “Money you can always get, it’s knowledge that is expensive.”
VITAL STATS Name: Keith Sheaffer Company: 5 Dicks No Chicks, LLC Title: Managing Member How long have you worked there? Created the company in January 2006. Keith Sheaffer, is one of the original dicks— a founding member of the 5 Dicks No Chicks investment group, that is.
“We get a lot of smiles when we say the name,” Sheaffer said. “I had an interesting conversation with the federal government when I set up the company and got our EIN number. The gentlemen was an older guy and he had to repeat the name multiple times due to the fact that he needed to get it exactly right for tax purposes. It was entertaining.”
The name is a playful representation of who they are. The basic premise is that the members are not influenced by significant others and investment decisions are unanimously decided by the group behind closed doors.
Sheaffer, whose full-time job is with TST Inc. Consulting Engineers in Fort Collins, says 5 Dicks No Chicks was the product of three guys hanging out enjoying some adult beverages.
So far, the group has done pretty well in their investment opportunities, making 9 percent on their money, Sheaffer said.

IN HIS WORDS
What is it about this job that makes it challenging? This company is a breath of fresh air. The group started it because we all like each other and wanted to hang out with each other. This company was just a by-product of our relationships. Now we have a reason to hang out and make a little money.
Makes you get out of bed in the morning? I get out of bed every morning because I love life. I love living life, my family and my little girls make it very easy to live each day for them. I, like most, wish I had more time to spend with them, but that’s the reason I spend the time working and trying to create better for them.
Things that impress you? Excellence impresses me. Trying to do things the best that I can, that’s what I strive for, continued success. I am inspired by the innocence of children and the majesty of nature. Things that are nobler than just one man or mankind in general.
Things that don’t. I don’t like whiners. I don’t like the words “I can’t”. I definitely don’t like liver and onions.
How do young/new employees get ahead? In this company there aren’t employees, there are just investors. The original partners in this group do all of the paper work, research and business transactions. It’s really cool; if people want to approach us, then they basically have to be sponsored by one of the original members. We trust each other and if we’ll put our name/reputation toward someone, they’re in. If not, they never get a chance.
Did you ever think in a million years you’d work here? I never had a clue. This company got started on a relationship that began over four years ago. We became closer and closer and we were at my house having an adult beverage and the idea just popped up and the next thing I knew, we were doing this.
What’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever done while at work? Smartest? Well 5 Dicks No Chicks hasn’t been in business long enough for me to do a really stupid thing, but the best is our initial investment into Halliburton. We are all capitalists; we live in the greatest country ever.
What’s the most unusual thing you’ve ever done to make money? Besides actually working for it, I was in elementary school and I used to loan money to kids and have them pay me back twice the amount the next day. It was a way to pay for the ice cream bars I liked to eat.
What do you do during your breaks? I like to work out, play basketball and just basically enjoy the time away from work.
What’s one thing about your job you would do, even if you weren’t paid to do it? I like interacting with my partners. They are very interesting; we enjoy each other outside of what we do. I will have these relationships for the rest of my life. Name one thing in your life that really prepared you for your job. I think being an athlete. The lessons learned playing athletics are very similar to life. You have to win and lose graciously. People don’t inherently learn these lessons through life. The discipline, the commitment, the time and effort to succeed just doesn’t magically happen; it takes work.
What’s the biggest payoff in your job? I would have to say the people again. I enjoy hanging out with these people. They are basically an extended part of my family, which is big for me.
What do you do when you’re not at work? I love to travel with my family. I love to workout and do athletic things, golf, water and snow ski. I love to ride my Harley. I love being a dad. Spending time doing things completes the circle for me.
Pets? We have one fish named Buddy. Really he is Buddy 2, but don’t tell my daughter, she doesn’t know Buddy 1 is swimming in fish heaven.
Favorite TV shows. My favorite show is watching sporting events. There are never any repeats and it shows competition.
Movies. I love the movie “Predator.” I dig Arnold and the movie is basically very cool.
Books. I like all of John Sanford’s “Prey” series. Since I am basically a kid, I believe I am the main character in the books.
What Web sites do you have bookmarked? ESPN, Budweiser Events Center, Rush Limbaugh, E*Trade (of course) and a few others.
Where do you play? I love to play golf at Pelican Lakes, but mostly I play when I travel. Anywhere I go, I like to basically have a good time. I love to play at the lake at our house and I love to workout in the workout area in my basement.
Go out to eat? I have to tell you, the best place I ever eat at is at my house. My wife is an awesome cook. But if I would have to name a few they would be Guadalajara’s in Windsor, the Bent Fork at the Promenade shops and Austin’s.

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
