Keith Kimmel has much on his mind these days. He says he creates because, by golly, someone has to.

The 33-year-old Fort Collins artist began his career as a graphic artist for television after earning a bachelor’s degree in English and associate’s degree in digital media. Becoming quickly bogged down by the corporate world, Kimmel desired to be more expressive than advertising would allow.

He channeled his creativity into an interactive novel in 2001 and moved into visual arts and painting from there.

“It’s more than just making pretty pictures, it’s about making a statement, challenging social norms and exploring a deeper meaning,” Kimmel said.
His artwork is modern and abstract because he grew up in the East and has always been intrigued by metropolitan art.

“I like to think my work has divine inspiration in it,” Kimmel said. “It’s important for me to make a statement with the times, what resonates, what needs to be said and what we are looking for right now.”

Though very spiritual, Kimmel hesitates to call himself religious. He tries not to align himself with a label, for fear it will misrepresent what he is about, he said.
He takes risks with his paintings because he knows if he makes a mistake, there is usually a way to correct it.

The most difficult thing about being an artist for Kimmel is finding other ways to make a living. He does Web design, but he said it is difficult not being able to constantly focus on his passion.

In his free time, he incorporates recreation into his life to add balance, but art is always in the forefront.

Kimmel’s artwork will be on display for a coffee shop tour all summer long at various coffee shops in Fort Collins. His work ranges between $350 to $1,000, and he will also do work on commission.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
