People have been known to pull ’em, pluck ’em, shave ’em, wax ’em, and now zap ’em. For decades, people have found ways to remove unwanted body hair, distancing themselves from our hairy ape ancestors.

“We’ve been trying to get rid of hair since Cleopatra’s day,” said Carol Hiller, general manager of Harmony Laser Center of Fort Collins.

The latest trend is laser hair removal. A laser emitting a beam of light passes over the area of treatment. The beam is absorbed by the dark pigment in the hair and hair follicle and converted to heat, which destroys the hair.

“It’s becoming more popular and more accepted because it’s quick and noninvasive,” said Kim Barnes, certified laser specialist and owner of Essentially Bare in Greeley.

Laser hair removal can be done on just about any area of the body. Hot spots for women are face, legs and bikini. Men are getting unwanted hair removed from their back, neck, ears and chest. And it isn’t nearly as painful as in “The 40-year-old Virgin.”

“Some people describe the feeling like a rubber band snap,” Barnes said.
Treatments vary in price depending on the area. An average treatment above the lip could cost $50 while full leg treatment could range from $300 to $400. Barnes said usually a person will have six to 8 follow-up treatments, about four to 8 weeks apart.

Laser hair removal is not only a cosmetic procedure. Many athletes and people with diseases that cause excess hair growth recognize the benefits.

When considering laser hair removal, it is important to find an individual with certification recognized by the state and who has a medical director on staff. When done improperly, the procedure can cause severe burns, which could lead to scaring. Also, laser hair removal can not be done on freshly tanned skin.

If you aren’t quiet ready to be beamed up yet, waxing, though more painful is always an alternative.

Meshawn Inskeep, a wax technician at Scruples Beauty Supply Salon & Spa in Loveland, said waxing has been on the rise the last three years.
Waxing removes the hair from the root and does not need to be done as often as shaving.

“People come in wanting no body hair,” Inskeep said. “I have women in their 50s who have never waxed before wanting Brazilians.”
And she’s not talking about the wonderful people from Brazil — she’s talking about a waxing treatment for hair, well, down there.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
