Darren Mahuron sees things from a different angle. While peering through his camera, he takes glimpses of reality and later introduces them to slices of fantasy.

The 34-year-old dabbled in various careers including filmmaking, TV graphics production and music before turning to his long standing hobby of photography. He started with portrait photography as a side job and taught himself how to use Photoshop.

“When I was living in Florida, I was very concerned with making sure I did things the way other photographers do things,” he said.

Then, in January 2005, Mahuron and his wife Lisa moved to Fort Collins to open their own photography business. This time though, Mahuron was going to do things his way.

“It was going to be a risk anyway, either a success or a failure, but I would know right away,” he said. “I started doing things the way I wanted to do them, and luckily people liked that. It frees me up as an artist.”

In January 2006, Summit Studios opened in its new location in The Avery Building above Beau Jo’s Pizza. Mahuron describes himself as a lifestyle photographer with a commercial art edge. His work appears in national magazines like Vice, Juxtapozed and Alternative Press.

Though many of his portfolio pieces carry a defining style with almost a retro feel, Mahuron is careful to not limit himself.

“I try not to pigeonhole myself into a specific style,” he said. “I don’t want to create something I’m not happy with.”

From the more absurd to traditional wedding pictures, Mahuron will do just about anything, he said. He attracts a good percentage of business through the use of myspace.com and his own Web site. He enjoys framing and focusing much of his work on Fort Collins and Old Town in particular.

“Part of what I want to do is document the amazing characters who live and work in Old Town,” he said. “I very much feel Old Town is a big family and has embraced us. An ultimate goal would be to print a book of art, not only to showcase my artwork, but the personalities of Old Town as well.”

While sitting in his studio surrounded by his work, Mahuron looks at a picture of his wife, Lisa. He is reminded of the quote, “Behind every successful man there is a woman.”

“There couldn’t be a more clear case of that,” he said. “She keeps me motivated and inspired.”

She is also actively involved in the business, helping with e-mails, paper work, printing and more.

“We just love to take pictures — that’s what we do,” Mahuron said.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
