Hazel Miller can capture your heart in an instant. She has a musical laugh and a glowing presence.

But she says it’s the Loveland Choral Society in its upcoming show “Amen: Feel the Spirit!” — featuring Miller — that will amaze the audience at the Rialto Theater in Loveland.

Miller and the 100-voice choir will kick off four shows in a row of impassioned music on Oct. 12.

Miller is originally from Louisville, Ky., and grew up Catholic, learning some songs in Latin.

“That really freaks people out when I start singing out in Latin,” she says.

She lives in Lakewood now and loves Colorado. “Red Rocks is the most beautiful and acoustic place I’ve ever performed,” Hazel says. And she’s traveled to every state, other than North Dakota and Alaska, and all over the world: Egypt, Japan, Korea, Turkey, Israel, Panama and Honduras. “I don’t know what the hell I was doing in Honduras,” she says.

A performer with 30-some years of experience and leader of “a loud funk band,” Hazel surprised me by saying that she doesn’t read music. She says, “I’m afraid to learn how.” But that doesn’t stop her powerful voice from resonating with deep understanding on every note.

She is also a humble person, complete with an aura of gold, who says the bio on her Web site makes her sound more important than she is.

“Whether she is singing blues, jazz, pop, or gospel, her voice charges the songs with a primal dose of genuine soul.”

This quote from her bio expresses what audience members say they experience while listening to Miller sing.

However, Hazel says, “Prepare to be shocked and awed” by the 100-singer chorus full of well-educated singers. The 32 voices in the choir sing a complicated eight-part harmony for “He’s Got the Whole World.”

Hazel admires their courage and ability to tackle difficult and different music, especially gospel. She says, “They are such precise singers, I feel that I can just follow them.”

The beautiful, seamless flow of music accompanied by the feeling of joy in the air keeps a permanent smile on Hazel and the audience alike.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
