For everyone who has dreamed of whirling and twirling to the sweet sounds of a 50-piece orchestra, the chance is right around the corner.
The 23rd Annual Wild Goose Masquerade Ball is Oct. 14.
“The spirit of the Wild Goose ball is a little dark. We’re moving into fall,” said ball creator Randy Lumb.
The spirit is dark so it’s fitting that the ball falls a mere two weeks before from Halloween. Attendees are encouraged to dress for the occasion. Formal, semi-formal and costumes are highly encouraged, though not necessary.
“People are dressed up and have fancy masks — the women add feathers,” Lumb said.
The ball features music from Denver-based group Mostly Strauss Orchestra. The majority of the dances will be waltzes and polkas but some Latin tangos and swing dancing will be in the mix.
“The dancing is accessible (the waltzes and polkas). Other kinds of dancing — the tango and the foxtrot take some skill,” Lumb said.
Ball coordinator Theo Meyer said all skills levels are invited to the masquerade and she encourages everyone to come and have fun.
“Some people are just beginners and have had just one lesson,” she said. “There are all ages, some people bring children. We like a mixed group.”
Lumb will be teaching a class, open to the public from 8:30-10 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12 in the CSU Rec Center. The class is free for CSU students and $5 for the public.
The Wild Goose Masquerade doesn’t cost a lot, either.
“It’s very affordable; some balls run $50 to $100 (per person),” Meyer said.

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
