You go to the gym. Lift weights. Hit the treadmill.

But are your eyes getting a workout? (Yes, we said your eyes.)

If you use a computer for long periods of time, your eyes can become irritated or your vision blurry at the end of a work day. There’s even a name for it: Computer Vision Syndrome.

A study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health found nearly 80 percent of those working at a computer for more than two hours a day suffer from the symptoms, which include headaches, double vision and after images or tired, burning eyes.

“The unique characteristic and high visual demands of computer work and play make many individuals susceptible to the development of eye- and vision-related problems,” says Jeffrey Anshel, an optometrist and author of “Visual Ergonomics in the Workplace.”

Fortunately, in addition to regular professional eye care, there are ways of reducing potential eye and/or vision problems. Asap spoke with Dr. Anshel to learn what can be done to help your eyes.

ADJUST YOURSELF

Your computer monitor should be at an arm’s length and slightly below eye level. The screen should be positioned at a slight angle to avoid glare.

BLINK

We tend to forget to blink while concentrating and gazing into the computer screen. Remind yourself. Blinking cleans and lubricates the eyes allowing for clearer, more comfortable vision.

LOOK AWAY

Every 20 minutes, look away from your computer screen. Breathe and blink casually.

STRETCH

Every hour, take five minutes to stretch. These exercises for your eyes may provide some relief:

Rub palms together until warm. Place palms over closed eyes for 5-15 seconds.

EYE YOGA

Holding each “pose” for 5-15 seconds, move your eyes to the far right, then far left, then up, then down, then diagonally up and down in each direction.

MOVE ALONG

Every few hours, get up and move around to allow blood flow, increase energy, and allow the eyes to rest. If your eyes persist in discomfort, visit an optometrist.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
