NEW YORK — Most of it is underwater, but people are still interested in owning a piece of Titanic history.
MEDAL: A bronze medal commissioned by Titanic passenger Molly Brown to honor one of her rescuers sold Thursday for $10,200 at a Christie’s auction. Brown was known as “the unsinkable Molly Brown” for inspiring the people in her lifeboat to row and keep calm despite their fear and the frigid temperatures. She and other passengers were saved by the captain and crew of the ship Carpathia, whom Brown later honored with bronze medals, including the one sold on Thursday.
FLAG: A corroded cast bronze flag from a Titanic lifeboat sold for $72,000, and a bronze name board, from another of the ill-fated liner’s lifeboats, sold for $60,000. The small flag depicts the logo of the White Star Line, which owned the ship, and came with a name board that reads, “S.S. Titanic.” Both were attached to one of 16 white wooden lifeboats that ferried passengers to safety during the ship’s sinking. The $60,000 lot consisted of a 13-inch-long “S.S. Titanic” name board and another that says “Liverpool,” the Titanic’s port of registry in England.
UNDERWATER: Much of what remains of the Titanic rests underwater about 350 miles from Newfoundland, Canada, where the ship sank on April 15, 1912, after hitting an iceberg, killing 1,522 of its passengers and crew. More than 700 people survived. Thursday’s auction also included a detailed deck plan for the Titanic’s first-class passengers, which sold for $21,600. | Only registered users can write comments. | | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
