Exotica ball ditches theme to attract different crowd

By Rebecca LaPole
For NEXTnc

A change is in the air. Not just the color of the leaves and the smell of the season.
It’s happening at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA) on Friday.

A 15-year tradition, the Exotica Erotica Ball, ends in favor of a dynamic multi-dimensional event. “The Ball”, presented by The Collection, is a revitalized BMoCA Halloween costume party produced in the spirit of fun and artistic expression,” according to organizers.

BMoCA decided to change direction to support their auxiliary organization, The Collection, and to bring the party back to the museum and reconnect with their clientele.

“The erotica party had different themes like water, air, and other natural elements, but always the same energy,” Collection director Keleigh Asbury says. It was held in the Boulder Theater, which holds 900 people, was outsourced and expensive. It also attracted the same crowd year after year.

The switch encourages people who are excited about “The Ball” and supporting the 350-person capacity museum to attend.

For an even more intimate option, the Blackbox Theater holds a VIP lounge limited to 80 people, boasting the only open bar, hors d’oeuvres, performance and video art and live DJ music by Ivy (black bridge) and Royale (doperecordings.com).
Although it is no longer erotica-themed, Asbury says, “It will still be hot.” She adds that it will be more inviting for people in general.

A live band, dancing, body painting, photo booths with professional photographer Darrin Frisby, and the elixir lounge by Tonic Oxygen Bar — serving unique and interesting non-alcoholic cocktails and bursts of enlightening gas — will create an atmosphere everyone can enjoy.

Asbury expects eclectic, creative and elaborate costumes from those within the arts community.

There will be haunted costumes and exotic ones as well; no one should feel out of place.

“Don’t be afraid to dress erotic — we won’t be bobbing for apples or going on hay-rides or anything like that.”

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
