Jigsaw teaches brutal, bloody lessons to morally wayward folks in the "Saw" movies.

So we went to actor Tobin Bell, who embodies Jigsaw, to teach us about the scariest scenes on film. Bell (who you can catch in "Saw III," the latest in the franchise) chooses six -- three of his own movies and three older films.

Here they are in chronological order, in his own words. Some picks may surprise you. Boo!

___

"Diabolique," 1955, Simone Signoret, directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot: A woman sees a face in the window.

"There's a scene where she looks up at this house. And in the window of the house, one pane of the window, there's a face looking down at her. I saw that when I was a kid, and I could never get it out of my head. It's not what you call a high-tech, sci-fi special effect. Sometimes you don't need all that stuff to scare the bejesus out of you. What made it scary was it was her house, and she was in the yard, she looked up and this person who was not supposed to be there, was supposed to be dead ... is looking down at her. ... It's one of the most famous scenes in scary movies that you've ever seen."

___

"The Birds," 1963, directed by Alfred Hitchcock: Birds attack a playground full of children

"A bird lands in a playground. Children are playing. Swings are swinging. The breeze is blowing, the bees are buzzing, the flowers have popped out. A bird lands. How nice! Isn't that lovely? Another bird lands. The children are playing. Another bird. And then another bird. Then they all swarm and attack the children. You take an idyllic setting and you contrast it with a horrible situation, and it makes it even more horrible because you have more to lose. You start out very mild-mannered, very content. All's right with the world. And then, boom. It can happen quick."

___

"Five Corners," 1987, John Turturro with Rose Gregorio: A young man throws his mom out the window.

"Scary scenes you can either see it coming or not see it coming. You can go the opposite way. Sometimes that's just as scary as foreshadowing what's going to happen with the music and the footsteps or the person going in the garage and you're saying 'No, no, don't go in there!' ... John Turturro, he's in the kitchen with his mother, he's telling her he loves her. Then he throws her out the freakin' window. It's totally out of left field. Completely surprising. And he's in a 40-story apartment house. So that's one of the scariest scenes I've ever seen, because it's so completely out of left field and unexpected."

___

"Malice," 1993, Bell alongside Bill Pullman: A confrontation in a school basement.

"He works in a school. And he comes downstairs to find a lightbulb in the supply closet. He finds someone's living down there. and it's me. We have a scene where he talks to me. I'm the custodian in the school. It's a fairly friendly scene. He asks me if I'm living down there. I say just temporarily because my landlady kicked me out. We talk and he leaves. And he just gets halfway down the corridor and BOOM! There's ... this knock-down, drag-out fight. I think it's a classic horror scene. It's incredibly well-shot, very well put together. ... There are two scenes. One is extremely low-key, the other is extremely violent. Sometimes you juxtapose that kind of lead-up, and it just can be pretty intense."

___

"The 4th Floor," 1999, Bell alongside Juliette Lewis: A locksmith tries to open a door.

"Since I'm a locksmith, I come and I try to put a key in her lock. I shine a light on the lock and I turn to her and I say, 'Did you put something in this lock?' She says 'No.' I say, 'Well, you're going to need a new lock.' Just that scene foreshadows that someone's been (messing) with her lock. It's just a very scary moment. We're up on a staircase in an old house, and we're standing outside her apartment door. Sometimes less can be scarier than more. I know we're used to being scared by these incredible traps and mechanical devices and things. But sometimes things that are suggested can be as powerful as things that are overt."

___

"Saw," 2004, Bell alongside Leigh Whannell: A serial killer appears after hiding in plain sight.

"When I get up off the floor at the end, the way Leigh Whannell played that moment, the expression on his face was perfect. It was just shocking. No one that I knew was anticipating that moment. It was total surprise. When I read the script, I didn't anticipate it. When I got to it I was like, 'Whoa!' It was totally unexpected. I hadn't seen that before, that gag. ... I had to play it as a guy who has been in this situation, absorbing this information. He was on some sort of muscle relaxer, but he was conscious the whole time. So he heard everything that happened. Half of his head was blown off, too."

asap staff reporter Ryan Pearson was scared by "The Birds." You were too, admit it.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
