ICE FISHING Don’t forget huge gloves, patience when hitting frozen fishing hole
Fishing on an ice-covered lake, shaking until you’re blue like Chilly Willy the penguin, may not be for everyone. But oddly enough, some anglers love it.
Ice-fishing is the perfect lure for those looking for adventure of a calmer, different sort. Fishermen find both solitude and camaraderie on frozen lakes, enveloped by crisp mountain air.
Bob Harrington, assistant manager in the fishing department at Jax Outdoor Gear in Fort Collins, said the majority of Colorado ice fishing occurs in the mountains.
“It does get cold enough down here, but it’s not as good as up near Granby or Gunnison,” he said.
Harrington outfits ice fishermen (and women) with gear and equipment, but he has never got into the sport himself.
“The equipment is a lot simpler than regular fishing equipment,” he said. “It’s pretty basic.”
The way it works is a hole is drilled through the ice so the water is exposed. It’s important that the ice is thick enough to be sturdy and safe. The Colorado Division of Wildlife says ice should be 4 inches thick for walking on and drilling a hole, and 6-8 inches for a snowmobile.
As with any Colorado fishing, a license is required. When your hands start to get cold, a thermos of steamy hot chocolate — or stronger — should do the trick. So, bundle up, grab your pole and hit the ice this winter.

GOOD TO KNOW Always check ice conditions before heading out, dress warm, claim a good spot on the ice and be patient. Don’t worry, the deep popping and cracking sounds are usually a sign that you are on safe ice, which should be at least 4 inches thick. A fishing license good for the remainder of the year is $31 at sporting good stores or online at www.wildlifelicense.com/co/. Sweet spots include: Granby, Chambers, Grand Lake, around the Gunnison area, the Delaney Butte Lakes, Lake John, and Taylor, Stagecoach, Elevenmile, Crawford and Williams Fork reservoirs.

Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
