ROANOKE, Va. — A 15-year-old Virginia boy has set the North American record for reciting digits of pi.
Gaurav Raj recited 10,980 digits of the infinite number Monday, breaking the North American and U.S. record of 10,625 digits, which had stood for 27 years. Gaurav recited about two numbers per second for one hour, 14 minutes and 28 seconds during an after-school session.
It was the third time that the Salem High School junior had attempted to break the record.
NO EXPLANATION
Gaurav says he can’t really explain his feat.
“I know what the numbers are, but it’s not like I can see them,” he said. “I just know what they are.”
His math and computer science teacher, Linda Gooding, had asked students to memorize about 40 digits of pi, which served as an impetus for the record-breaking attempt.

I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
