I miss Kurt Cobain. Granted, I never met him, but I knew his music.
Cobain's songs spoke to me and the clan of high school misfits I called friends, assuring us that it was OK to be a social reject.
That's why watching the new Nirvana DVD, "Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!" — an 83-minute montage of performances, backstage footage and rare interviews shot at the height of the band's popularity — is such a bittersweet experience.
I remember hearing "Negative Creep" for the first time in 1989 on a college radio station in New Mexico and immediately phoning the DJ to find out who it was.
The next day I special-ordered a cassette of Nirvana's debut album "Bleach." When it arrived a week later, it went directly into my car stereo and stayed there for the next two months.
A year later I sat by my tape deck, finger poised over the record button, waiting anxiously for that same DJ to play the first song off the band's second record, "Nevermind."
And I remember making the seven-hour drive from Las Cruces, N.M. to Phoenix one New Year's Day to see them open for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam. I don't recall much about the headliners, but I can tell you that Nirvana opened with "Floyd the Barber," followed with "School" and wrapped with "Drain You." After they left the stage, nothing else mattered.
So, on the one hand, this new DVD offers an unfiltered look at the dynamic between Cobain, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic — one that many fans will cherish. On the other, Cobain is gone, so it's a sad reminder that I can never again look forward to new music from one of the great songwriters of my lifetime.

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
