Holidays are family days, and family days don’t always go well — not even when you bring your fiancee home to meet your parents.

Bas Bleu Theatre spins this tale in “Greetings!” a comedy that questions the true importance of the season.

It is presented through timely issues, making it relevant to present-day life, said Tomily Munir, who is directing the play.

The story follows Andy, who takes his Jewish, atheist fiancee home to meet his extremely Catholic parents and mentally challenged brother. The flames of glad tidings and good cheer are quickly doused, and the ensuing drama makes for light hearted and poignant moments people of all backgrounds can enjoy.

According to Munir there is a surprise in store for the audience.
“I don’t want to give anything away,” she said slyly.

Bruce Bergquist plays Phil, the Catholic traditionalist father.

“Phil’s a super, faithful Catholic who wants everything about Christmas to be kept very traditional, and he feels the whole world is falling apart,” he said, adding that he can understand some of Phil’s frustrations with the season.

“Within the last few years with the holiday season, you hear about Christmas bans or other holiday bans. People can’t say ‘Merry Christmas’ but hey, why not just celebrate life and enjoy it,” he said.

Bergquist, a retired Lutheran minister, said he enjoys stomping and moaning and grumbling on Phil’s behalf.

“Phil’s a delightful character. He’s not mean, he’s grouchy. But he has some good reasons,” Bergquist added.

Both he and Munir think the play, written by Tom Dudzick, will resonate with audiences.

“It’s more than a sitcom sort of thing,” Bergquist said. “There’s tension between generations and tension between Christians, Jews and non-believers. It touches on some thoughtful stuff and what’s really important in life.”

Munir agrees. She said the play touches on conflicts between different religious beliefs, on a small scale. “Our beliefs are just that, beliefs. The focus should be on our relationships with one another.”

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
