Bonnie O’Brien, left, and Jesse Laner, sit in their store, Urban Homestead, at Centerra in Loveland. The couple owns the first franchise of the home products store that originated in Durango.
Next week, Urban Homestead celebrates its first birthday and owners, Bonnie O’Brien and Jesse Laner, couldn’t be happier.

The small bath and body boutique, situated among mature corporate stores at the Promenade Shops at Centerra in Loveland, soaks up business by being different.
“I think it’s really important for people to know we are locally owned,” O’Brien said. “Our store is more an experience or lifestyle, not just an out-of-the-box corporate store.”

The first Urban Homestead opened in Durango eight years ago. O’Brien, who is from Pagosa Springs, frequented the store and formed a relationship with the owner. She and Laner, her fiance, opened the first franchise the day after Thanksgiving last year.

Laner has a degree in business and O’Brien has retail experience. The couple knew they wanted to own their own business. Laner said the first year has gone well, though they were met with a few challenges.

“I think there are still a lot of people who don’t know who we are,” she said. “It’s really hard to compete with the corporate stores. They have so much buying power and sales we can’t compete with.”

The name — Urban Homestead — can also be a little misleading, O’Brien added.
“A lot of people think furniture store,” she said.

What the store does carry is high-end bath products and lounge wear, including several brands from France.

The concept was to bring an East Coast and West Coast feel to Colorado — hence, the Urban style.

O’Brien and Laner are busy expanding their inventory and improving the business every day. Their Web site will soon allow customers to shop online.

“We do have goals to look into product development,” O’Brien said. “We would like to produce our own signature lines.”

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
