Want to get a party off to a great start? Serving a novelty drink or cocktail is always effective. But if you really want to kick-start your party, repeat after me: Jell-O shot.

Just the mention of the phrase in public usually gets the same result: an enormous smile, a great story and a willingness to share a favorite recipe that starts with a box of colorful Jell-O gelatin and ends with an even more colorful name like Cheeky Tiki, the Blue Aquarium or Lime in the Coconut.

Here are a few of the Jell-O shot recipes some northern Colorado residents shared with me, plus one of my own personal favorites.

—————
Broncos Jell-O Shots
1 small package orange flavored Jell-O
1 package berry blue Jell-O
vodka

Bring one cup of water to a boil and remove from heat. Slowly stir in the package of orange Jell-O. Stir until Jell-O is dissolved. Cool for five minutes. Add 1/2 cup cold water, and 1/2 cup vodka. Pour into individual plastic serving cups until half filled. Chill for 8 hours or until firm. Repeat process with blue Jell-O, but cool the mixture to room temperature after mixing with boiling water. Make sure it is completely cooled. Pour the blue mixture on top of the already firm orange Jell-O shots. Chill until firm.

Heather’s Lime in the Coconut Jell-O Shots
You put the lime in the coconut and shake it all up!
1 small package lemon Jell-O
2 small packages lime Jell-O
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 can coconut milk
2 cups coconut rum
2 1/4 cups water

Bring water to a boil and remove from heat. Slowly stir in the 3 packages of Jell-O. Cool for 5 minutes. Add coconut milk and lime juice. Wait another 5 minutes and stir in the rum. Pour into individual-sized serving cups. Chill for 8 hours.

Variation: Use pineapple Jell-O instead of lime to create Piña Colada flavored shots.

Holly’s Blue Aquarium Jell-O Shots
1 small packages of berry blue Jell-O
gummy fish candies
1 can of whipped cream
vodka

Bring one cup of water to a boil and remove from heat. Slowly stir in one package of blue Jell-O. Stir until Jell-O is dissolved. Cool for five minutes. Add 1/2 cup vodka and 1/2 cup water. Stir until dissolved. Fill plastic containers with mixture. Chill for 3-4 hours. Remove cups from refrigerator. Squirt a little whipped cream on top of the shot and place a gummy fish in the whipped cream.

Variation: Replace 1/2 cup of water with 1/2 cup Midori. The water becomes more blue-green and the flavor is great. You can also fill the cups halfway with blue Jell-O mixture, then refrigerate for 4 hours or until set. Place a gummy fish on top of each half-filled container, than top with another layer of blue Jell-O mixture that is completely cooled (see Broncos recipe for details).

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE A JELL-O SHOT

Liquor: When using vodka, don’t spring for the Grey Goose, folks. It doesn’t have to be top-shelf stuff in order to make a top notch Jell-O shot.

• Flavored vodkas and rums are good.

• Tequila will get your attention, but notnecessarily please your taste buds.

• Balancing your base liquor with banana liqueur, Midori, Crème de Coconut or other flavors can reduce harshness.

KITCHEN STUFF
Use little individual plastic cups with lids. They are available at retail stores, in bulk at stores like Sam’s Club, and online at kegworks.com.

A large punch bowl or serving dish. Fill it with ice then place the Jell-O shots (complete with lids!) in the bowl. Shots won’t liquefy or melt as easily.

A serving pitcher. It’s best to use a pitcher to mix your Jell-O and ingredients, so it’s easier to pour into the little plastic cups. Using a glass measuring cup also works.

Cookie sheets: Put shot containers on a cookie sheet before placing them in the refrigerator — it’s much easier to take them in and out without sloshing them.

Transportation: Stack your traveling Jell-O shots in a cooler and cover with ice to prevent melting. A standard-sized ice chest will hold 100 or more.

PITFALLS
Too much alcohol ruins the flavor. It takes a lot of time to make Jell-O shots, and you don’t want the end result to be vile.
Don’t be tempted to use Everclear. If you want to get that wasted, Jell-O shots are not the answer.
Allow plenty of time for your shots to set. Creating them the night before is a good idea.

Jell-O Shots, Baby Baby!
Written by Drew on 2006-11-17 22:09:20
This article couldn't be better timed. In honor of one of my friends birthday, each year we would go to Mick's Office back in MN. Anyways, Cole's birthday is on Sat. and once again the posse will be breaking the previous year's record. Last year we took 117 jell-o shots all with all the other liquids we downed. This year, they must break 118, but I believe the target goal is 155. Moorhead troupe, take a jell-o shot for me. And it is most definatley possible to get plowed on jell-o shots, although it isn't all that efficent. It gets progressively harder to get that jell-o out of their little plastic shot cups.

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
