John Holod’s job is unquestionably cool.

His office is a Gulfstream fifth-wheel RV, fully equipped with living quarters, kitchen and editing equipment.

During the past 10 years, he’s racked up a half a million miles on the road, traveling to the some of the most scenic and exciting locales in North America, camera and curiosity in hand.

He makes movies.

And for several months of the year, he travels the lecture circuit talking to people about his movies.

For a guy who made his first travelogue film at age 11 shooting footage from the back of his dad’s motorcycle on the way to the 1964 World’s Fair in New York, that’s not a bad way to make a living.

Holod will be in Fort Collins on Nov. 20 to show his film “Natural Wonders of the Northeast Coast” as part of the Adventure Cinema Series at the Lincoln Center.
The series — the Union Colony Civic Center in Greeley has a similar program — allows audience members to not only visually experience other parts of the country and world, but to interact with the filmmakers themselves.

“We’re there. That’s the hook,” Holod said.

It’s similar to what adventurers did 100 years ago when they would take a safari to Africa, for instance, then return home and give a lecture and slide show at swanky clubs wearing tuxedos and drinking cognac. Just without the fancy dress and drinks.

Holod’s “Northeast Coast” is a 1,500-mile trip from Virginia Beach to the Canadian border. The film shows there’s more to the Northeast than a sprawling metroplex. Wildlife and out-of-the-way places abound, Holod said.

From tremendous bird watching in New Jersey, of all places, to riding with lobster fishermen in Maine, Holod doesn’t just hit the touristy places.

Holod describes his films as, “What I would suggest to you if you were to do this trip.”
His newest production, which will come out in January, has a little different twist. It’s called “Gulf Coast Adventure: Still Wild and Beautiful,” and it’s a trip from south Florida up the Gulf Coast. Holod has been back several times chronicling the comeback of the areas ravaged by Hurricane Katrina.

“It shows viewers that the Gulf Coast isn’t destroyed. There’s still plenty to do, so you should go and spend money there.”

Once that film is done, he’ll set his sights on his next adventure somewhere in North America (he’s tied to the continent now because his RV isn’t seaworthy.)
Then, with camera and curiosity, he’ll hit the road, sure to bring back some great stories and compelling images.
After all, he has one cool job.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
