 Cutesy "manga" or "anime" characters from Japan — the likes of Pokemon, Hello Kitty, and Sailormoon — have been familiar faces to American children for many years.
But the animated images from Hentai, Yaoi and Lolicon comics are definitely not for kids. Drawn in the familiar manga style — large eyes, cute faces, and vivid colors — these are hard-core sexual images, which sometime feature notorious tentacle-monster action scenes involving a female character.
In America, manga was an $180 million market last year, and one with lots of variety. There are "hentai" (meaning "perverted") comics showing bondage scenarios. "Kawaii" or "cute" comics feature women with adult bodies and childlike faces, and Lolicon is a Japanese abbreviation for "Lolita complex." Teenage girls in Japan snap up Yaoi comics featuring men having sex with each other.
Why are these titillating, sometimes disturbing visual narratives so abundant in Japan?
JENNI SOHN asked Elizabeth Semmelhack, the curator of the exhibition titled, "Peeping, Probing, and Porn: Four Centuries of Graphic Sex in Japan" at the Museum of Sex in New York City about the history of these sexually charged images.

I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
