To movie and video game geeks, Samuel L. Jackson is a god of cool.
He's thrown his undeniable talent into the ridiculous fun of "Snakes on a Plane" and "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," playing agents of the law in both. He's presiding again over Spike TV's Video Game Awards, which air Dec. 13 from Los Angeles.
So it's appropriate that Jackson is something of a tech geek himself. We asked him to run down his favorite stuff — from games to TVs to cell phones:
___
MEDIA SERVER
"My newest and greatest toy is my Kaleidescape, which I love to death. It's like a DVD iPod for your house," Jackson says. The Kaleidescape — http://www.kaleidescape.com — is a hard drive that can stream media including DVDs to the 10 TVs in Jackson's home, including a Trinitron in the bathroom. "I can call up an actor's name and it'll show me all the movies that I have with that particular actor in them," he says. He overloaded his system with 975 DVDs, and is installing another drive that'll hold an additional 1,200 films. The last flick he watched on Kaleidescape was from Hong Kong: "Two girls are roommates and they end up hating each other and having a big fight and killing each other. It's a kind of funny movie."
___
TELEVISION
"My best TV is my projector in my screening room, which is connected to my satellite system," Jackson says. "So when I want to watch football games or something, I can watch high-def football games on the big screens. I always do it for the Super Bowl and big basketball games."
___
IPODS
Jackson has several iPods including the newer video-capable model, but doesn't watch movies on it. "I've got enough small screens going on that I don't need that," he says. "I watch movies on my PSP sometimes. And I watch movies on my Mac — a 17-inch. I already wear glasses, I don't need to strain my eyes any more." On his iPod: Lots of world music, including African artist Hugh Masakela. "I was just in South Africa and I ran into him so he gave me this big compilation of his. I got a lot of East Indian music that I got in Morocco when we were doing 'Home of the Brave.' I went to this record store off Warzazat and bought a lot of local music that I don't even know the name of. The names wouldn't come up on the database, so I just had to make up names for the songs."
___
VIDEO GAMES
Jackson owns the original PlayStation, PS2, Xbox and Xbox 360, which is in his screening room. His favorite games involve clubs and greens. "I'm always thinking about my golf game," he says. "I'm still hooked on 'Tiger Woods Golf.' I play that on my PSP, I play it at home. I also have a Golden Tee (arcade game), which I spend a lot of time standing in front of." His top score is a 3 over, both in real life and the virtual world. Jackson isn't rushing out to buy Sony's newest console. "I'm not really sure about PS3 right now. I keep hearing people say you can't play old games on it. ... The controllers don't vibrate. I'm going 'Well, what's the point?' You want something new."
___
CELL PHONE
Jackson is sticking with his old Blackberry for now, though its makers just sent him a new Blackberry Pearl that he plugged in to charge. "It's a good looking phone — nice, compact," Jackson says. He doesn't like the Pearl's trackball but may switch soon for its media capabilities. First, though, he needs help transferring his addresses: "I'm waiting on them to send some technical support before I start playing around with it."
___
CAMERAS
Jackson owns two Sony digital cameras, but no video cameras. And fans — he's a bit annoyed at you taking pictures with him. "When did we become a culture of picture-takers? Everywhere you go now — 'Can we take a photo together?' ... I'm always asking people, 'How many pictures of you and complete strangers do you have in your house?' They say, 'You're not a stranger. We have all your movies.' I name a movie they don't have then they go, 'Well we have almost all of them.' I don't know if I want to be on a photograph just sitting in your house."

| | "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth." | |
| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
