 WASHINGTON — Louis Braille is getting his own coin.
The U.S. Mint will produce a silver dollar commemorating the 200th anniversary of Braille’s birth. The creator of the alphabet for the blind was born in France in 1809.
Congress authorized the Mint on Thursday to issue up to 400,000 of the coins in 2009.
THE COIN
The coin will feature Louis Braille’s image and the first Braille symbol ever minted by the U.S. Treasury, raised dots that will spell out “Brl,” the contraction for Braille. A $10 surcharge will be added to each coin, with money from the coin sales going to support programs to help the blind.

I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
