Caution: you are approaching the dining table. A golden turkey sits in the middle surrounded by buttered rolls, fluffy mashed potatoes, mounds of stuffing, sweet cranberry sauce and homemade pumpkin pie. It’s a dieter’s nightmare and any food lover’s dream.
“It’s a little terrifying with the holidays coming up,” said Mary Frielingsdorf, 36, of Fort Collins. “I want to feel good about the choices I make and not feel guilty about eating that 10th cookie.”
Like for many cultures, food is such a part of the way we celebrate. That is until New Year’s comes and it’s time to make resolutions.
Margaret Grahm, a weight loss coach in Fort Collins says it is possible to have our cake and eat it too.
“You don’t have to take away your favorite foods,” she said.
Grahm encourages people to feel their hunger.
“We have a natural inclination to eat when hungry,” Grahm said. “As we navigate the holiday season, it’s important to tap into our hunger.”
That may sound easy, but telling grandma you are full and just don’t have room for her chocolatey brownies isn’t always easy. There are ways to still honor that person and not offend them.
“You can acknowledge the gift of food without eating it,” Grahm said. “You can maximize your enjoyment by wrapping it up and taking it home to eat when you are hungry. How big a compliment is that?”
Holidays can also be stressful and can lead to emotional eating. One of the downfalls is when people give themselves rules. A better alternative is to work toward something.
Grahm teaches that self integrity is keeping a promise with yourself, whether it’s to get up for an early morning workout or adding a serving of veggies to each meal. Then write down your triumphs and when you do reach for the box of cookies at 11 p.m. know that it’s OK. There is probably something else going on in your life. If you eat something that is not on your plan, it doesn’t mean you should completely give up.
“You are going to fail,” Grahm said. “We all make choices that don’t serve us, but if you drop an egg on the floor, you don’t just through the whole carton on the ground. Recognize when you drop an egg, clean it up and move on.” ——— | Only registered users can write comments. Please login or register.

| | "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth." | |
| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | Hola Amigos! I'm Sandra. I like to believe that people are 70 percent good and 30 percent dumb. I'm stickin to that story. Reading this blog might make you want to be good, but probably just dumb. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
