Are women better than men at hitting the target?

If you’re hoping to out-perform your significant other or male friends in a competitive sport, shooting may be the way to go. Tim Brough said women are typically better shooters than men.

He attributes women’s proficiency with guns to paying attention to detail and having patience. Women are generally better at concentrating, breathing and not pulling the trigger too soon, he said.

“We tell a man to do something, and men think they’re born with the ability to shoot well,” Brough said.

David Gill, vice president of the Colorado State Shooting Association, agreed that women learn quickly, and added that shooting is a competitive sport that doesn’t favor men.

“There are a number of different disciplines in it and women are capable of competing very well in it. Physical strength is not very important. It’s ideal recreation for women to engage in,” Gill said. “It’s something a couple can do and it’s something like golf — you don’t have to be young or particularly fit to do it.”

The best guns for women to start off with are smaller caliber varieties, such as a .22-caliber, which is the smallest available. It has a lesser recoil and is inexpensive to shoot.

Once a woman has become proficient with a .22-caliber, she can graduate to a larger gun — the size depends on what she wants to do with her shooting skills.

But if a woman intends her gun to be for self-defense purposes, Brough said a .38-caliber revolver is a common recommendation because it’s easy to operate. He said this is a good gun for women who don’t intend to practice shooting often. And, he said, revolvers are usually more reliable than a semi-automatic gun.

On the other hand, if a woman plans to practice shooting several times during the year, a semi-automatic handgun, such as a 9 mm Glock, is an common option, Brough said.

Lisa Brough stressed the importance of gun safety, especially for parents. It’s important to keep guns stored safely, especially if you’ve got kids in the home, and also to educate your kids about firearms, she said.

“It’s really a parent’s responsibility if they’ve got guns to teach (children) to be safe with the gun,” she said. “Let them see what it’s about. Education’s the key — so many gun accidents happen because parents have failed to recognize the curiosity factor in their kids.”

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
