Fort Collins rarely welcomes any buffalo into its territory but in the case of Rebecca McClive, the city will make an exception.
McClive, a wildlife artist, was chosen as one of 25 artists to participate in the “Where the Painted Buffalo Roam” fundraising project for Yellowstone National Park.
McClive will paint two wildlife scenes on a 150-pound, three-quarters scale
buffalo at the Collective Art Gallery in Fort Collins. Her buffalo, and the 24 others, will be placed on sidewalks and visible areas in and around West Yellowstone. All the artwork centers on one of three themes: Yellowstone Park, railroad history and American Indian culture.
The jury for the project approached McClive asking if she’d be interested in entering the contest to render a design for a buffalo and was selected based on her sketches.
McClive a life-long artist has decided, within the last three years, to make a career out of a hobby.
“My father was an artist and I was always painting,” she said. “I had an interest in wildlife — I got my degree in wildlife management — and now I mingle the two.” McClive said her audience focus is hunters and other wildlife enthusiasts. McClive, a Maryland native, moved to Fort Collins three years ago and said the diversity of the wildlife here is fantastic. “I try and take my camera everywhere,” McClive said.
McClive’s buffalo, a “him” is currently residing on her back porch while McClive draws the scenes she will eventually paint. One side of her buffalo will feature a cow elk and calf on a hillside with a grizzly bear in the background.
The scene, McClive said, will be a misty spring morning with lots of blue overtones. She wanted to “depict the tension of what can happen” in a split second before the cow and baby depart. The other scene will be a picture of the Firehole River that runs through the geyser basin in Yellowstone. Again tension-filled, this scene depicts a herd of buffalo on one side of the river, while a pack of wolves is on the other.
“It’s going to be a huge challenge,” she said. “He’s got a lot of lumps and bumps on him.” McClive will be working from canvass flatwork she did previously.
McClive will work on the buffalo in the Collective Art Gallery starting the first full week in December. Anyone interested in visiting with McClive is welcome to stop by and watch the buffalo come to life. | Only registered users can write comments. Please login or register. |

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
