Some Russian military traditions are holdovers from Czarist times — like the white cloth that soldiers still wrap around their feet instead of socks. Military service is still mandatory, though it lasts for two years, not for life as was the case for serfs.

Still, vicious bullying in the ranks and a brutal war in Chechnya make enlistment a scary prospect. Men between the ages of 18 and 27 are obliged to serve. This year, about 250,000 have been called up, in two drafts in the spring and autumn.

Thousands dodge conscription, some through medical or educational exemptions but mostly by bribing military officials, with some wealthier families paying up to $7,000 to exempt their sons. Those who do join the ranks are often from poorer backgrounds, with health or drug problems. The Russian army regularly complains about the "low quality" of recruits.

New conscripts face abuse and humiliation at the hands of older soldiers and officers, in what is commonly known as dedovshina, after the Russian word for grandfather. About 6,000 people fell victim to military abuse last year according to official data. In one case that shocked the nation, a soldier had his legs and genitals amputated earlier this year after having been beaten and tortured by fellow servicemen. His main tormentor was sentenced in September to four years in prison.

"They join as soldiers but become slaves," says Valentina Melnikova, head of the Union of Committees of Soldiers' Mothers, a leading advocate for soldiers' rights.

From 2008, conscription will be reduced to one year, but military officials say they will need to enlist twice as many draftees — around half a million per year.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
