Not many festivals want you to think their event is the pits.
Not so in Loveland this weekend. A half-block of the city will be cornered off to honor a small part of the community’s history — cherries. You read that right: those delightfully sweet morsels of fruit have a history in Loveland, and they’ll be stuffed into hundreds of pies (sans pits, of course) for the 11th annual Cherry Pie Festival.
The Loveland Museum/Gallery plays host to the event every year. This is the second year the pies will be made by Schmidt’s Olde Time Bakery, said Tom Katsimpalis, curator of interpretation for the museum.
“This year we’re ordering more than we ever have. Over 200 pies.”
Those 200 pies will feed the more than 800 people expected to attend. The festival started as a way for Loveland residents to commemorate its agricultural past, especially the cherry industry. Katsimpalis said the event also helps attract more people to the museum as well. Katsimpalis said the whole family can enjoy the festival, and it’s a great place to relax. “We really kept it quite simple,” he said.
“It’s a low-key family event with music.” The event takes place just south of the museum on 5th Street with all the cherry pie (and, yes, ice cream) anyone could ever want.
PIE, PIE, PIE The festival is 6-9 p.m. July 15 at Peters Park, on 5th Street between Lincoln and Cleveland avenues, in Loveland.
Admission is free, but a piece of pie will run you $2 with drinks and ice cream at 50 cents each.
There will be a little history on display as well.
“There will be a small demo on antique cherry pitters,” Tom Katsimpalis said. If pie isn’t your thing, there will also be two bands playing in Peters Park. Fat City Mardi Gras Band and Shawn Waggoner & the Tumblyweeds (yes Tumblyweeds) will be there to entertain.
MUSEUM HOURS The Loveland Museum/Gallery, at the corner of 5th Street and Lincoln, is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays ; 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursdays; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays; Noon-4 p.m. Sundays; closed Mondays. | | "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."
| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will.

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
