For decades, fisherman have gathered on wharfs telling tales of the blue marlin, the majestic king of the sea. And now, in a secluded area in the Bahamas, a 3,000 pound, 18-foot-tall sculpture, born in Loveland, will become a visible landmark of that tradition.
Kent Ullberg, a renowned wildlife sculptor who has a workshop in Loveland, spent the last eight months creating this magnificent piece, which was loaded into a gigantic container and shipped to Chub Cay Harbor, 125 miles east of the Florida coast on Monday.
A passionate conservationist, Ullberg was never a stranger of the sea. “I don’t sculpt anything I have not experienced personally,” he said.
Ullberg was practically born with a rod in hand as he grew up in a little fishing village in Sweden. He worked summers on his grandfather’s boat and has caught a few marlins in his day.
Designing his Chub Cay Blue sculpture has allowed Ullberg to relieve his adventures with the blue marlin.
The piece was casted at Madd Castings in Berthoud and assembled at Ullberg’s studio in Loveland. Ullberg’s time is split between his home in Loveland and his home in Corpus Christi, Texas.
“I cannot stay away from the ocean too long,” he said.
He will travel to the Bahamas for the installation of the sculpture on July 28 and a dedication and unveiling ceremony Aug. 4.
Ullberg said the biggest challenge with his latest project will be getting it to the Bahamas. The sculpture will travel to Port Everglades Harbor in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where it will be loaded onto a World War II landing craft and transported the rest of the way. The piece was commissioned for about $190,000.
Ullberg comes from a family of artists and has work displayed all over the world.
“I just love it,” he said. “I would do it even if it were illegal. It’s a way of expressing myself. I love nature. Nature images have always been a part of my life. My mission is to inspire people about how precious nature is.”

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
