David Morgan was driving 35 mph on his BMW K1200 R roadster when, in a split second, he was on the ground.
His life may have been saved by his clothing — a helmet, gloves and jeans. But his injuries also showed the limitations of those safety precautions.
“My helmet was cracked. And I did end up with two black eyes even with my helmet on, going only 35 mph,” said Morgan, 34, of Naples, Fla.
Now Honda Motor Co. may have discovered the biggest safety innovation for motorcycles since the helmet. The company designed air bags for its new $24,000 Gold Wing motorcycle, which will be on the market at the end of July.
When sensors detect a crash, the air bag inflates in 0.15 seconds — faster than the blink of an eye. The air bag is V-shaped to help secure the rider in position. It opens in front and reduces the speed at which a rider gets thrown off the motorcycle.
Jon Seidel, a spokesman for American Honda, said the maximum advantage of the air bag is for frontal collision. But the highway administration will be watching to see what effect the air bags have on injury patterns.

I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
