OK, so you’re probably used to Colorado winters. Having just moved here a few months ago, I’m still adjusting to frigid days in the teens and the occasional snowstorm.
Sure, I’ve loaded up on the necessary gear for surviving such weather, like wool socks, down vests and all things fleece. But one of the most effective — and enjoyable — ways I’ve discovered to keep warm is… the hot toddy.
What is a hot toddy? Traditionally, a hot toddy is a drink made with whiskey, honey and spices and served hot. Today, more and more hot toddies are showing up on bar menus, with less traditional ingredients like rum, reposado tequila, brandy and wine.
Favorites include mulled wine, hot rum punches and alcoholic coffee drinks, to name a few. The recipes are easy, and the results are sure to warm you up on a cold winter’s night.

——— RECIPES
Traditional Hot Toddy in Less Than 60 Seconds 1 ounce whiskey 1 ounce honey 1 ounce lemon juice 3 ounces water (hot) Warm honey and lemon for 30 seconds in microwave. Add to hot water and whiskey. Serve in a mug.
Easy Egg Nog With A Kick It doesn’t get any easier than this — warm 8 ounces of egg nog (don’t boil), add a half ounce of brandy and a half ounce of rum. Serve. How easy is this? (I prefer to use bourbon.)
Irish Coffee Add a few drops of vanilla and a shot of rum to 2/3 cup of coffee. Top with whipped cream. Simply yum.
Mulled Wine Not only does this taste great on a cold night, it has a wonderful aroma that fills the house. 2 bottles dry red wine 4 ounces port or brandy 12 whole cloves 4 cinnamon sticks 1 large orange, zested (use a vegetable peeler or a paring knife to scrape orange colored part of the peel) Stick cloves in the remaining orange peel. Combine all ingredients in large pot. Bring to a simmer. Do not boil. Heat for 20 minutes and serve in a large, heat resistant punch bowl or in individual mugs.
Mulled Wine in a Minute Buy pre-packaged Aspen Mulling Spices and add red wine as directed. This couldn’t be easier, but you miss out on the fabulous aroma you get when you do it from scratch. Holly Bea | Only registered users can write comments. Please login or register. |

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
